IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
A new solo exhibition by Marc Gooderham
13 September to 18 November 2022

The Union Club is delighted to present a set of twelve new paintings by club member Marc Gooderham; who you may recall created our wonderful Christmas card in 2020.

Taking inspiration from our local neighbourhood, Marc depicts Soho’s late bars and lost weekends, its strangers and street corners, as a place loved in equal measure for its revelry and contemplation. Street levels are painted with atmosphere and feeling, recording moments in time as the city shifts overnight.

This collection captures some of the area’s iconic and long-standing establishments, from Bar Italia, Lina Stores, and Maison Bertaux, to The Union Club itself. While a little further afield, the Thames overlooks Canon Street Railway Bridge in a delicate composition of noctunal blues and golds.

Painted in acrylic on wood panel from preliminary sketches drawn over the past year, each scene is rendered with an almost cinematic quality that captures the beauty and crumbling grandeur of an older London.

Needless to say, this series has been as much a joy for Marc to paint as it is for us to now show it off to you.
