Adventures in reciprocity : Sarah checks out The Boundary

Tags: Posted: 2nd November 2022

As you may know, the Union has an ever growing list of other clubs, national and international, with whom we enjoy a reciprocal arrangement. This arrangement means that you, our lovely members, can visit and make use of their clubs (generally up to twelve times per year) as if you had a membership yourself. The full list of clubs is on the membership page here – scroll down. If you’d like to visit one, please email Cat with your reservation dates and we will get in touch with the Club and request a booking for you.

If you visit one of our reciprocal clubs, we’d love to hear about your experience so that other members can get a sense of what to expect… and start adding some of these lovely locations to their travel bucket lists!

Words and photos by Sarah who visited The Boundary recently…

Nestled in a car park, in a quiet suburb of Portland, Oregon, you could be forgiven for missing The Boundary Social Club, however miss it and you will miss out.

A reciprocal club with more of a focus on wine and cocktails than dining The Boundary offers a refuge from the bustling streets of the University town in which it resides.  Membership includes access to a cellar room for member’s to store their own wine  as well as probably one of the most inventive cocktails menus we had ever seen.

We visited on our first night in Portland which happened to be a Saturday and like our beloved Union is often its quietest night.  For the first hour we had the place to ourselves and spent that time studiously sampling their ingenious cocktails.

Steve Graff (@boundarywineguy), the wine concierge came to say hello and welcome us to Portland and as the first Union members to visit the club.

The vibe was similar to the Union, from the stuffed local wildlife and art on the walls through the the comfy snug made out of wine cases.

We had a great time and if find yourself on the West Coast of the US, it’s worth checking out especially if you a partial to a cocktail or two.  Just make sure you knock on the loudly on the unassuming door!
