COLOUR/LIGHT/MOVEMENT: An exhibition by Ptolemy Mann

Tags: Posted: 6th March 2024

We are honoured to present Colour/Light/Movement, a stunning collection of new large-scale paintings by the acclaimed artist Ptolemy Mann, from March 26 to May 17, 2024.

This is an exciting year for the artist, whose work is the subject of three upcoming solo exhibitions and a monograph launch at Tate Modern, where one of her major works resides.

Ptolemy’s paintings are rollercoasters of pulsating colours and syncopated rhythms, executed with lavish expressions of line and gesture. They are, she says, the culmination of a ‘twenty-five-year period of gestation and thinking about painting that has finally emerged’.

Ptolemy started as a weaver and quickly became known for her distinctive and intuitive application of colour harmonics. In recent years, she has broadened her stroke, brushing great swathes of paint directly onto her woven works. The marriage of these two mediums – weave and paint – is unique and one described by Ann Coxon, Curator, Tate Modern, as possessing ‘seductive beauty and materiality’. (‘Thread Painting’, Hurtwood Books.)

Ptolemy also paints on the somewhat less precious mediums of canvas and paper, as can be seen in this exhibition. As with the woven works, her paintings present an ‘explosion of colour and gesture’ as their main act, supported by rhythmic patterns harking back to the loom: ‘The crossing of vertical and horizontal marks echo the warp and weft of weaving, but also architectural features such as portals’. (ibid.)

The positive reception of Ptolemy Mann’s paintings is abundantly clear, with her US gallery having staged three hugely successful solo shows in just two years (2022-2023).

It is a privilege for us to have the opportunity to present this exhibition at the club. All works are for sale, along with a selection of smaller paintings that are available to view on request.
