LANDSCAPES: SEEN AND IMAGINED
13 September to 9 October 2022

On behalf of the estate of West Hall, an historic manor house situated in Kew, the Union Club is delighted to present a collection of oil paintings by the late Jane Butcher (1951 – 2022). The paintings, found alongside numerous other artefacts in the vast cellars of West Hall, are thought to date from the late 90s to early 2000s.

We know little about Jane Butcher other than the former curator of Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham, described her as ‘an accomplished local artist’ and selected her work for a joint exhibition in 2006. Jane completed her BA in English Literature at the University of Warwick and a BA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School. She later worked as an editor, including for the New English Library – a cult (and now defunct) publishing house churning out sci-fi, horror, and thriller paperbacks by iconic writers such as Frank Herbert, Stephen King, and Brian Aldiss.

The West Hall collection draws its inspiration from nature, in particular cloudscapes hovering between the recognisable and the abstract. Painted in a loose style using brush and palette, the works appear to evoke memories and moods of places visited or perhaps imagined by the artist.

We are accepting best offers over £200 for the larger works and £50 for the small paintings. All are oil on canvas and unframed.
